"How Bacteria Talk to Each Other"
June 25, 2009. The Clayoquot Field Station was pleased to be the land home of a research team from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute of Woods Hole, Massachusets. They did research in the waters of Clayoquot Sound for two weeks in June.
Tofino Botanical Gardens and the Raincoast Education Society hosted a talk on Thursday, June 25 from 8-9 pm for by Laura Hmelo, PhD Candidate. Her topic was Chemical Communication and the Carbon Cycle, or "How bacteria talk to each other".
Bacteria are social organisms. Learn how bacteria are able to communicate with one another in the ocean, and why they do it. Did you know that bacteria regulate the behaviours that make people sick, cause barnacles to stick to ship hulls, and recycle nutrients in the ocean so that they are available to living organisms from one generation to the next? Laura presented a very interesting and accessible presentation on this topic and answered a slate of related quetions from the audience of over 20 people.

Darwin's Café. Thursday, May 28. A Mermaid's Tales bookshop presentation. Kathy Page is the author of six novels, including The Story of My Face, which was short listed for the Orange Prize in 2002, and Alphabet, which was nominated for a Governor General's Literary Award for fiction in 2005. The Find, her new novel, is forthcoming with McArthur & Co, spring 2010.

12th Annual Pacific Rim Shorebird Festival, May 1 - 3
On the Pacific Rim, peak shorebird migration occurs in late April & early May. About 100 people joined the Raincoast Education Society for walks, talks and more! they learned about these amazing birds that stop on our local mudflats and beaches for just a few days during a journey thousands of kilometers long!

The Eco-Confessional was in full swing Saturday April 25 in the Gardens and Sunday April 26 at Tofino's Village Green. It will operate all summer on an as-needed basis. Confess your eco-sins, repent and receive absolution from "Father George".

Featuring Leilah Nadir's gorgeous new book: The Orange Trees of Baghdad:
a glowing memoir of pre-war Iraq in all its splendour; an inspiring tale of family and culture and the significance of history.

West Coast stories, poems, rants & ruminations. A packed house in Darwin's Café enjoyed a wide range of stories, poems and essays from members of the Clayoquot Writers' Group and members of the audience.
Whales & the Human Imagination with author & philosopher Jeff Warren featured on CBC's Ideas
Thursday March 18, 8pm, Darwin's Cafe
Philosopher's Cafés are public gatherings featuring high-level conversation centred on a particular topic or issue. Here, author, producer and 'explorer of consciousness', Jeff Warren guided a discussion on human attitudes and ideas about whales throughout history, and provided his own insights into their minds. It wasa stimulating and lively evening, moderated by Gardens' Director, George Patterson.
Pacific Rim Arts Society Community Consultations

PRAS invited the public to attend a presentation by consultant, Lydia Marston-Blauuw based on informaton and views gathered from residents of Tofino and Ucluelet on arts and culture in our communities. About 40 people joined board members at the Garden Café. Residents of the area had responded with high ratings for the importance of arts and culture and wanted more activities and performances.
The Oyster Who Looked at the Sky book launch. Saturday, November 22, 2pm. Garden Café. A family friendly event sponsored by Wildside Booksellers.
The Oyster Who Looked at the Sky (Oolichan Books) is the result of collaboration between two Tofino women: writer Darcy Dobell and artist Marion Syme. This beautifully-illustrated picture book evokes the magic of the west coast while celebrating the natural curiosity of children.
An enthusiastic group of children and adults came for the west coast launch of this new book in our Garden Café. The author read the book and the original illustrations were on view. The official Oyster Festival Mermaid served cookies and the children made their own oyster memento. Copies of the book are still available at local booksellers.
Spartina Workshop. Tuesday November 18, 9 -11:30 am. Presentation followed by field trip. Clayoquot Field Station. Spartina anglica is an invasive alien grass, commonly known as cordgrass that invades intertidal shorelines. Spartina has recently been found on Vancouver Island. Controlling its spread is of special concern to government agencies, NGOs, shellfish growers and community stewardship groups. A number of people attended the workshop to learn how to identify Spartina, what havoc it has wreaked in the western USA, what is being done in BC, and how to be part of the solution. October 10-12, 2008. Vancouver Mycological Society
The Society met at the Clayoquot Field Station for a Thanksgiving foray into the woods to discover many different kinds of fascinating fungi, which were exhibited to interested visitors.
October 3-6, 2008. Milagro Retreats. With a combination of yoga, natural foods and relaxation, Milagro Retreats presents several special retreats at the Gardens each year. Click on their name to discover more.
Global TV in the Gardens, September 25, 2008
Kevin Newman, national Global TV anchor and crew came to Tofino Botanical Gardens to broadcast their national newscast, during the federal election. They visited a number of smaller communities across the country, covering different issues. Here, their focus was the environment. Kevin asked for opinions from several local residents, including George Patterson and Josie Osborne. About 40 local residents attended in person.
Art in the Gardens. Saturday September 13 & 14, 2008.
The fifth year for this event was a great success. Featuring local artists, artisans, writers, dancers and performers, everyone was engaged with all the activities. Music, spoken word, demonstrations of capoeira, face painting and flamenco dancing were all enjoyed under a warm sun. Presented by the Pacific Rim Arts Society and Tofino Botanical Gardens; organized by Pam Lewis with the assistance of many volunteers.
Lantern Festival. Sunday, August 24, 7:30 – 10 pm
This favourite event for families in Tofino brought hundreds of people to the Gardens to enjoy the wonder of hand-made lanterns hung thoughout the pathways by magic elves. Another successful annual fundraiser for the Raincoast Education Society.
June 6-8, 2008. Tofino Food & Wine Festival. The Tofino Food and Wine Festival began in 2003. It was an idea formed between two foodies who worked in the food and wine industry, at a restaurant set amidst the beautiful Tofino Botanical Gardens. Since then, the Festival has become a destination event for tourists and a popular weekend for locals.
