Second Year of Sustainability Camp a Double SuccessThe Tofino Botanical Gardens Foundation is pleased to announce that its second year of Sustainability Camp was a resounding success. The goal of Sustainability Camp is to increase youth knowledge and awareness about global and local environmental issues, with the hope that this increased awareness will help the next generation to develop solutions and inspire action for positive environmental and social change. Our 2008 Program consisted of two camps covering all of the grade six classes in Clayoquot Sound: the 2nd Annual Wickaninnish Elementary School Camp and the 1st Annual Ahousaht-Hesquiaht Camp. Each camp covered two nights, and a total of three full days. The camps were guided by the six-day Sustainability Camp curriculum developed by the Tofino Botanical Gardens Foundation. This is the first curriculum of its kind, with a complete curriculum for kids devoted to issues about how to create a sustainable future. The Tofino Botanical Gardens Foundation raised enough money to support the entire cost of both camps for the students and donated staff time and resources. The Foundation is grateful to the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust, The Clayoquot Forest Communities Program, Uu-a-thluk, and the NSERC PromoScience program for their generous support. Read about the first camp's activities here. Read an article about the students making cloth shopping bags here. OverviewIn recognition of the United Nation’s Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014), the Tofino Botanical Gardens Foundation is developing the “Youth and the Biosphere Programme” to teach youth the core concepts of sustainability, conservation and preservation. Youth and the Biosphere ProgrammeSustainability Camp is the first curriculum in our Youth and the Biosphere Programme. These camps will bring youth (Grade 6 and 7) together to discuss the problems and solutions that the world must face in the next 50 years. Participants will stay at the Clayoquot Field Station and use the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve as a living classroom for sustainability education and action. |
