Field Trips & Fun

Please scroll down for information about Saturday May 8, 2010 field trips in Victoria, BC as part of the Society of Ethnobiology annual meetings.

Tuesday May 11, 2010 is the main day for field trips at the ISE Congress, with a limited number also being offered on Sunday May 9. Most trips will be a half-day, allowing for plenty of time to view posters, visit the town of Tofino, rest, or shop.
Many exciting field trip options are being planned for ISE Congress participants, such as:

  • Ethnobotanical interpretive walks and tours with Nuu-chah-nulth First Nation guides
  • Tours of the Meares Island Tribal Park (via sea-kayak, boat, vehicle and/or foot)
  • Traditional dugout canoe tours with Tla-ook Cultural Adventures
  • Boat trips to Hot Springs Cove, including a chance to soak in the Hot Springs
  • Boat trips to Cougar Annie's Garden, a remote century-old heritage site that was home to a store, post-office, and housed the settler family of Annie Rae-Arthur.
  • Wildlife viewing by zodiac boat or covered boat (whales, sea lions, seals, sea otters, pelagic birds, bears, eagles and more)
  • Guided tours of local aquaculture (shellfish and salmon) farms
  • Surfing, sea kayaking, hiking and more

Most field trips will be a half-day.
Information about these field trips will be posted as it becomes available.

The Society of Ethnobiology is holding their 33rd Annual Meeting,  "The Meeting Place: Integrating Ethnobiological Knowledge", in Victoria, BC, Canada from 5–8 May, 2010.  As this is directly preceding the ISE's Congress, the Society of Ethnobiology invites all ISE Congress participants to come early and participate in their field trips on Saturday May 8.  For more information and to sign up for field trips or the whole conference, click here.
You do not need to attend their full conference to be eligible for field trips. If you do decide to take a field trip (or attend the whole conference) - consider flying in to Victoria rather than Vancouver when making your travel arrangements. Victoria is a 5 hour drive from Tofino, both are located on Vancouver Island.
There are no extra fees in addition to the field-trip prices quoted, however keep in mind that you are responsible for your own travel from Victoria to Tofino.
