  • #HappyNationalTreeDay ! Today we honor and give thanks to trees by planting a new specimen tree in the garden.
Say hello to our newly planted Cryptomeria japonica 'Black Dragon'. This cultivar differs from the species because of it's very dense and darker green needles and it's irregular pyramid shape, along with some imagination, can make it look like a rearing dragon.
Japanese cedars are Japan's National tree and although grown often as an ornamental tree, these trees are very economically valuable. Their wood can be used in many projects from houses to the furniture inside, with a bonus of a pleasent fragrance. Many of their qualities are similar to why we enjoy and appreciate the Cedars here on this side of the Pacific Rim.
Thanks to all trees for what you give and provide to all other living things. #truegreatness

  • Happy #NationalForestWeek ! Take time to learn about, celebrate and thank the forests. Take a walk, plant a tree and appreciate all the things you own made of wood.
#ForestFact : Tofino's Temperate Rainforest is managed by wind (not fire) The strong winds bring trees down to lay on the forest floor, creating opportunities for new plants to grow on the fallen trees slightly higher surface. Being closer to the light allows the new plants to outcompete most plants that would grow without the extra height, nutrients and other advantages that a nurse log provides.
#TreeFact : Trees grow at different rates. The fastest growing tree in Canada is a hybrid poplar (Populus deltoids x P. Nigra), growing 5-8 feet in a year. The fastest growing tree in the world is The Empress tree (Paulownia tomentosa) growing an incredible 6 meters in its first year.
